Toxic Childhood?

I thought some of you might be interested to follow up this 'Toxic Childhood' link. ('Toxic Childhood' is the book I mentioned last night. Toby's teacher set a cat amongst the pigeons by writing a letter home to everyone encouraging parents to read it. Some people have found it v. sensationalist and nannying - they don't want schools telling them how to be parents. I've found it interesting with q. a lot of thought provoking and good stuff in it. I'd like to talk about it at Fuzzy sometime to get your views).

Sorry I had to crash out before the end! Paul was filling me in on some of the things you were mentioning about the book and they really struck a chord with me. I've read a lot about the need for children to be given the space for their imaginations to flourish, and that we crowd them out with too many toys and 'stuff' because we assume that is what you do for them.
I love the way that ours experience the garden - its all bug hunting and big sticks. Not a toy in sight for most of the time. Kind of how I remember my childhood.
Would be really interested to read it and to see where a discussion would lead. Can see why some parents were narked at the nannying, though its a no-win situation if these kinds of trains of thought aren't mainstream, how will they ever trickle down into wider consciousness if someone doesn't recommend!

Check out Rowan Williams' Lost Icons: Essays on Cultural Bereavement (2003 T & T Clark) – esp the chpater on Childhood as a lost icon. Brilliant. Click here for a review of this book. I think I might have a copy somewhere.

The Monastery
Gillian wants to nag people to watch the final episode of The Monastery tomorrow night (9.00pm BBC2). She heard a Radio 4 feature on it on Sunday morning - apparently 20,000 people have logged on to the Monastery website and loads of people have signed up for retreats after watching the series. It is compelling viewing. Gillian really want to talk to other Fuzzy people about it.
Go to www.worthabbey.net for more about the series.
